World War II Combat Aircraft Photo Archive #5
ISBN: 3-935687-44-3

This book continues the series of WWII Photo Archives from AirDoc. This time, it is on the early models of the Ju-87, the A, B, C and R variants that fought in the first years of the war.

As you might guess from the series title, the book is mostly photographs taken from a variety of sources. Though most are labeled as from someone's collection, some of these photos were old friends that I've seen over the many years I've been interested in aircraft. However, many of them were  new to me, and that is always a nice thing. I especially liked all of the Ju-87A photos that are in the book as this is one variant that is not well represented in most Ju-87 books and articles. The images are either one, two or three to a page. I found them to be well done, though a tad on the dark side from my viewpoint, but that is probably as much a result of the images being old and not always taken in the best of conditions as anything else.

In line with other AirDoc books in this series, there is a short historical background and description of the variants in both English and German. I found that the translation was generally good, though there were several instances where the sentences in the historical background  were a bit odd, perhaps something that was missed by the English proofreader. Interestingly, this did not extend to the photo captions, all of which read well. AirDoc continues to put images in the backgrounds of those pages which have no photographs, making those portions somewhat difficult to read. The inside of both covers have excellent color profiles and a three-view done by artist Richard Caruna

I find that this book and this series are excellent resources for both the aviation enthusiast, historian and modeler alike. It is a book that you can buy with confidence.
