Notes: Two disc set

Once again, Master Class Modeling Videos has produced another 'how to' set. This time there are two discs and they cover a complete how to on painting a small scale (as in 1/32 or smaller) figure. The video includes a WWII Marine pilot figure produced by MasterDetails so that the viewer can work along with the author in detailing this piece.

Rafe Morrissey is the one who takes us through all the steps needed. And I do me all the steps. The first DVD starts with an introduction to doing figure painting and provides a suggested list of tools and materials. The work is sponsored by Grex airbrushes, so don't be surprised at them being plugged in the appropriate areas.

As one of thousands of modelers who have never been able to do a good job on small figures, I was particularly interested in how this one was going to be. The video starts and ends with music more appropriate to some sort of solemn occasion than a how-to video, but fortunately, it doesn't last long. Rafe Morrissey's voice is calm and soothing and easy on the ears. He does a superlative job of explaining each of the techniques that are performed and does offer alternatives from time to time.

The video is more than just a painting, as the prep and construction of the figure is also a major part of the procedure. I was particularly impressed with the methods for minimizing sanding, especially in some of the small areas where one often has to apply filler. Even more so that several different ways of achieving the same end were provided. It is always nice to have options. The painting of the figure consumes a great deal of the time. The use of both acrylics and enamels is covered quite well. I was amazed at how easy the author made the work of blending paints seem to be and look forward to perhaps giving this a go at some time in the future. For sure it is not a rapid process to do one of these, but the results are really worth the efforts. The video also includes a listing of all the various materials used so you can exactly replicate the results.

I was a bit skeptical about all this when I started viewing, but by the end, I was really glad that I watched it all, even though it took me several sessions. I learned a huge amount from it and would bet that you will as well. It is a superlative how-to and if you only buy one video of this type this year, this is the one to get.
