This latest edition of Kagero's 'Aircraft Aces' series continues with the Luftwaffe and this time, has three of the lesser known pilots.

The first one is Heinz Ewald. This 84 victory ace survived the war and flew Bf-109s almost exclusively on the Eastern Front. The decal sheet that accompanies the book has markings for three of his aircraft; two Bf-109G-6s and a 109G-10. All of them carry either his initial 'E' or a nice pink pig, in recognition of his nickname 'Esau'. Modelers may recodnize his G-10 as it is on the box art of the Hasegawa 1/48 Bf-109G-10 kit of a few years back.

Next is Walter Wolfrum, also an Eastern Front pilot who finished the war with 137 victories. He spent his Luftwaffe career in 109s as well and the decal sheet includes the markings for his Bf-109G-6 'Black 15'. This aircraft also carried the name Quex, the nickname of his girl friend and later wife.

The final ace is Werner Hohenberg, who, like his compatriots, spent the majority of his flying time against the Russians. Thanks to a particularly nasty wound, he spent many months in hospital. Upon release he immediately went into combat during Operation Boddenplatte, flying a FW-190D-9. He was shot down by ground fire in this plane and captured. He finished the war with 33 victories in 200 combat sorties. The 190D-9 that he 'borrowed' for his last fateful flight is provided on the decal sheet.

The nice thing about this batch of aces is that they all survived the war, some of them living a very long time doing other things besides flying planes!

In common with other books in this series, there is a decal sheet by Techmod that provides markings for five aircraft in 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 scale. Only the unique or unusual markings are provided so insignia and data markings will have to come from the kit sheet or some other source.

Another fine publication from Kagero and highly recommended for the Luftwaffe fan out there.
