NOTES:

Part of "Luftwaffe at War" series.

Have you ever ordered a book sight unseen? I do this more often than I'd care to admit. That is how this particular volume came to be in my library. I really didn't know what to expect as I have not seen any books in this series before. It ended up being a pleasant surprise.

If you have been around long enough, you will amass quite a library of books and magazines. You might even get jaded into thinking that there isn't anything out there that isn't new. It is not uncommon to find a lot of books on the Luftwaffe that are simply nothing more than rehashed material and photos that have been around seemingly forever. Much to my delight, I did not find that to be the case with this one.

The book is card bound and the same size as the Osprey and other similar series of books. It is also mostly photographs. There are four pages giving a brief history of KG 100. While many of us would like more, it is quite sufficient to tell the story. Combine this with the images in the book and it does tell quite a tale. What is really cool is that there are several pages of period color photos.

Basically KG 100 flew three different aircraft types, the He-111, Do-217 and the He-177. Most of the book is about the He-111, a little about the Do-217 and the rest about the He-177. As many of you know, KG 100 was involved in trials and operations using the smart bombs of the day, the Hs-293 and the Fritz X. These  were radio guided and were quite effective if the aircraft got close enough to find a target.

Overall, I was quite impressed with the book. The very large number of new images (at least to me) is what really makes this a treasure. If you are modeling any of the types flown by KG 100, you will find this to be a worthwhile resource.
