This edition of the Russian Aircraft In Action series covers the Sukhoi Su-24 'Fencer'. In just about every way, this aircraft was a response to the F-111 Aardvark or TFX that was developed by the US. Initially designed with a wing very much like the Su-15 series and with VTO capabilities, it was realized early in its development that this was not the way to go. The lift jets went away and a new wing was developed. As variable-geometry wings were the rage of the 60's, it was natural that this new aircraft would have those. It turned out to be the trick that changed the Su-24 from a mediocre aircraft to one that was quite capable of performing its intended mission of low level strike.

The development of the Su-24 followed a remarkably similar route to the F-111, having problems with the electronics and some airframe issues that required some reinforcement. Though the F-111 is now history in the US, the Su-24 continues to be the primary fast strike aircraft of both Russia and Ukraine. The Fencer was also exported to Iran, where it continues to be in small scale use, and Iraq, where most were destroyed on the ground, though some escaped to Iran where they were incorporated into the IRIAF.

In concert with other books in the series, this one starts off with three full pages of historical background which includes development, variants and operational history. It is then followed by over 70 pages of large photographs in both black & white and color of the different aircraft and variants.  The photos are all very well done as are the captions. There two pages of profiles and one of a three view.

If you are seeking a good primer on the Su-24 Fencer or want a book to accompany your model project, then this is one that you should actively seek.
