Caracal Models CD 72100: F-111A Aardvark

Units: See review

Scott Van Aken

This particular Caracal Models sheet is for the Hasegawa 1/72 kit, which would be great if it was a kit one could actually locate without taking out a second mortgage. Perhaps Hasegawa will reissue it soon. Other options are the older AMT/ESCI kit or even the really ancient Revell TFX offering. Note that there is no guarantee the tail bands will fit as they were not designed for these alternate kits.

Aside from the few options which are in standard SEA camouflage with the light grey undersides, all the other planes have black on the lower surfaces.

There are 10 options on this sheet:

F-111A 66-0020, Combat Lancer - 1968 (four serial options)

F-111A 66-0026, 442nd TFTS

F-111A 67-0032, 389th TFS

F-111A 67-0034, 430th TFS

F-111A 67-0037, 474th TFW

F-111A 67-0068, 429th TFS (combat loss during Constant Guard V)

F-111A 67-0070, 391st TFS

F-111A 67-0081, 347th TFW

F-111A 67-0092, 430th TFS

F-111A 67-0094, 430th TFS (Cambodian gunboat kill marking)

The decals are superbly printed by Cartograf and instructions provide placement information. There are enough common markings and stencils for one aircraft. If you wish to do more, then you can use the kit decals. I really like it that Caracal chooses to offer a number of their 1/48 sheets in 1/72 and look forward to others.
