HISTORY

The ChTZ S-65 was a diesel powered tractor that was produced between 1937 and 1940 by the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant. Tens of thousands were built during that time period with at least 37,000 going to the army. After tractor production ceased, the factory switched to building tanks. The S-65 was widely used as a gun tractor by the Soviet Army, though I am sure it could easily pull a four bottom plow.

THE KIT

It almost seems as if all the common stuff has been kitted in 1/35 so to find something new, a model company has to go a bit off the beaten path. So we have the aerosans and now this important, but often overlooked piece of equipment.

This kit is very much a curbside as the engine area is completely closed by the radiator, hood and side pieces. There is a good representation of the lower engine  and a superbly detailed chassis. As you would expect, most of the parts count goes into the suspension and the separate track links. There are 34 links per side with each link assembly taking three pieces.

A small photo etch fret is included and this item is used to enhance the large fuel tank on which the instruments are located. This sits right in front of the driver, which has to increase his confidence if going into a fire zone.

In terms of markings options, there are not any. You get a nice decal sheet for instruments and that pretty well covers it. These can be painted either green or grey. Though hardly needed, a full color five view is provided for each color option. Instructions are well drawn and properly detailed.

CONCLUSIONS

If you have one of several big Soviet gun kits that Trumpeter makes, this will be a great addition to the collection to show one of those guns being towed.
