NOTES: |
For the Platz kit. |
For the
last new 1/144 Crusader sheet, Starfighter decals has decided to pick the two
squadrons aboard the USS Shangri-La during what had to be its last cruise in
1970 These markings are designed for the difficult to find Platz F-8 Crusader, kit PD-7. All common markings and insignia will
have to come from the kit.
The sheet provides markings from two fighter units aboard the USS Shangri-La.
First
up is VF-111 and is in the markings of the CAG bird. Both planes are light gull
grey and white. VF-111 went on to Phantom, then Tomcats and was one of the first
F-14 squadrons to be disestablished in the early 1990s. It later re-emerged as
VFC-111, previously VFC-13 det Key West and flying F-5Ns that were ex-Swiss
aircraft.
The other is VF-162, which went away when the F-8 was retired. Both of these are F-8H models, which were upgrades from the F-8C and the instructions show what needs to be added.
The ALPS printed decals are very nicely done and for those who have used these before, not a problem. New users should be advised that these are somewhat fragile in terms of scratching if over-handled and need to be cut out individually from the solid backing.
