HISTORY |
Back in the late 1970's there was a need to replace the SH-2F LAMPS helos on destroyers and frigates. The Navy put out a tender for a new helicopter and that was won by Sikorsky and their H-60 design. A much larger helo that the SeaSprite, the Seahawk is much more capable, thanks to its ability to carry larger and heavier subsystems.
Using the same basic airframe as the Army's UH-60 Blackhawk, the Seahawk has been developed further by the navy into an SH-3 replacement; the SH-60F, and a replacement SAR helo, the HH-60F which has additional armor and exhaust deflectors for operation in hostile environments. With the exception of the Marine Corps, all branches of the US Armed Services use the H-60 in one role or another.

THE KIT |

Considering the size of the finished kit, one gets quite a few parts for the money. Most of the 50+ pieces are in the usual light grey plastic. There are a number of clear bits and weapons include two torpedoes. A trailing Magnetic Anomaly Detector is also included. There is no detail in the aft cabin where the sensor operators have their positions, but this is rather typical of many helicopter kits.
Detail on the parts looks very good, and though I haven't test fit any pieces, it appears that fit should be good. Instructions are on the back of the box and the 4 steps appear rather complete and logical. There is a small decal sheet that is basically just insignia and NAVY titles. It would have been nice to have a few unit tailcodes and such as well. These should not be that difficult to make from various letter/number decals sheets.
These kits were some of the first ever released by Accurate Miniatures, but have gotten almost no attention from the building public. Other helos in the series includes an AH-64, AH-1 Cobra, and USAF HH-60. Not sure what else is available, but it would be nice if there was an SH-2 and SH-3 available.
