Hi, I’m Tony Hodun, and this is one of five tables of Hasegawa 1/48 kit listings I’ve developed to aid you as a modeler or collector in finding the right kit to build the version you want, to fill the gaps in your collection, or to find the parts you need.  This page covers Japanese WW II Aircraft.  See the U.S./British WW II Aircraft Page for a more complete explanation of these tables. If you’ve got useful input, please contact me at hodunmisinec@cinci.rr.com , I will reply as soon as I am able.  Enjoy, and happy modeling/collecting!

Hasegawa offers more types of 1/48 Japanese WW II aircraft kits than any other manufacturer; they produce for the home market in a big way.  Some of their earliest 1/48 kits are in this section, but the majority of these molds were developed from the 1980’s to date, and feature engraved panel lines. There are five earlier 1/48 WW II era kit families with raised panel lines (all are nice building kits), and four are in this section. These include two of three ex-Mania tooled kits purchased when that firm went out of business, the Ki 27 Type 97 Fighter (Nate), and the early tooled N1K2-J Shiden KAI (George). This last is not to be confused with the newly tooled early and late N1K2-J kits issued in 2001.  (FYI, the third ex-Mania kit is the F4U-4 Corsair found in the Allied section). The other two older kits are early Hasegawa tooling for the J7W1 Shinden and for the A6M5 Type 52 Zero. Hasegawa also introduced a fully retooled A6M5 series in 2001 with engraved panel lines, not to be confused with the older A6M5s.

My thanks to Olaf Böhm, Chris Booker, Thomas Brown, Graham Causer, Fernando Jose Diaz de Sousa, Georg Draese, Grant Elliot, Van Firth, Dal Gavan, Jennings Heilig, Mike Horrell, Jim Obermeyer, Mike Peters, Rafael Rodriguez, Juan Carlos Gómez y Sarzotti, Martin Sazma, Robert VanderMolen, Paul Weinert, and Ross Whitaker for their helpful input!

Parts Tree Labeling Notes:

A – Hasegawa uses capital letter to designate each different tree, almost always molded on a tab on the tree and noted on the instructions, except for a few of the earliest kits.

b – Hasegawa uses a subletter to designate similar trees that can be produced in two or more variations using inserts (e.g. Jb is the A6M2-N fuselage tree, the two fuselage halves are modified but tree is otherwise identical to tree Ja, the A6M2/3 fuselage tree). The subletter is always molded on a tab on the tree, but may or may not be noted in the instructions.

A* - occasionally Hasegawa reuses a letter for two or more different parts trees in the same kit family, or modifies a parts tree without using a subletter.  The star (*) is my own way of noting differences between these trees (e.g, there are three different A trees in the A6M Zero family).  The star is never found on the parts tree or instruction sheet!

All versions to date share six common parts trees.

Ki43 I : 09080, 09425, 09540, and 09589 include the added parts trees with longer wingtips, cowl, canopy etc. to build Ki 43 I only. 51944 builds a Ki43 I and has added parts to motorize the prop, very neatly done.

Ki43 II : 09082, 09491, 09508, 09657, and 09728 have parts trees with different fuselage, cowl, wingtips, etc. and build the later Ki43 II only. 09634 is identical and also includes two 250 kg bombs from the Ki84 kit series.  51948 builds the same late Ki43 II and has the same added parts as 51944 to motorize the prop.  09413 is very similar to 09082 but includes earlier cowl front and smaller carb intake to build an early Ki43 II with small or large carb intake. 09467 is close to 09413, has both cowl fronts and large carb intake only.

This family covers all four Ki 44 variants. I am using the most recent research regarding the Koh, Otsu and Hei versions. Early postwar researchers believed that the 40 mm cannon equipped version was the Model II Hei, and the later MG equipped version was Model II Otsu, but this was corrected later.  The error does show up in some earlier references and some aftermarket decal sets, even recent ones.

Ki 44 I :  09182 will build the rare Ki 44 I only, also includes instructions and decals to modify the kit to build pre-production Shokis that saw combat in Burma and China with the Kingfisher Unit.

Ki 44 II a : 09137, 09603 and 09825 build a Ki4 4 IIa (Ko = a) only.

Ki 44 II b : 09177 and 09301 build the Ki 44 IIb (Otsu = b) with faired 40 mm wing cannon, but 09301 also includes parts to cut back cannon fairings and expose the barrel ends.

Ki 44 II c : Both 09136, 09336, and 09531 build a Ki 44 IIc (Hei = c) only. 51020 is the Ki 44 IIc kit with a set of Jaguar resin super detail parts.

Ki 44 II a and II c : Both 09194 and 09711 include the parts to build either the IIa or IIc version.

All but three of the kits include identical plastic parts to build a production Ki 84 Ia with different decals.  09614 also includes a pair of 250 kg bombs. 09346 has different cowl parts, exhausts, and rudder and only builds one of two different prototypes, not the operational version, also includes 250 kg bombs.  09773 includes the parts to build either a pre-production version or a production machine.  51941 comes with standard Ki 84 Ia parts, the fuselage, wings, cowl are clear plastic, and also includes photoetched and white metal interior details.

Complete coverage of Japan’s most famous WW II warplane!  Note: Several parts trees are not always the same things in this series (e.g. tree A is either 4 different fuselages or a centerline float!)!

A6M1 Variants:

09981 and identical 09840 include the parts and decals to build either of the two A6M1 prototypes.

A6M2 Variants:

09143, 09191, 09244, 09251, 09260, 09268, 09284, 09481, 09528, 09573, 09800, 09875, 51951, 09983, and 52601 build the basic Model 21.  Identical 09904 also includes a resin figure of Tetsuzo Iwamoto.  09337 and identical 09834 are based on these and include an exposed  metal tail wheel gear assembly as sometimes seen in training units; the modeler must remove the aft end of the fuselage.  Almost identical 09626 also includes a pair of 60 kg bombs (from the A6M2-N trees)

09142, 09394, 09882, and 09793 include all the Model 21 parts plus the aft canopy to also do an early Model 11.

09855 and 09995 include the parts to build the two-seat A6M2-K trainer version.  09929 is similar but comes with A6M5 wings, A6M2/3 clear parts, and a larger resin scoop to buils the later A6M2-K.

A6M2-N Fighter Seaplane:

09069, 09322, 09440, 09681, 09922, and 09994 include parts for an A6M2-N floatplane with beaching dolly.

A6M3 Variants:

09118, 09181, 09565, 09828, and 09984 build the clipped wingtip Model 32.

09117, 09407, and 09985 build the rounded wingtip Model 22.  Similar 09170, 09280, 09495, 09986, and 09919 also include the 20 mm wing cannon to do a Model 22a.

A6M5a/b Variants:

09070, 09351, 09517, 09782, 09864, 09891, 09987, and 09988 build a Model 52a (Ko) only.  51940 also builds a Model 52a (Ko) only, the fuselage, cowl, and wing trees (A**, B**, and C**) are clear plastic, also includes added cast metal interior parts and photoetched interior framing.  09543, 09882, and 09993 are the Model 52a (Ko) kit with added parts to build a night fighter version with oblique cannon.

09384, 09428, and 09989 build a Model 52b (Otsu) only. Model 52b (Otsu) 09847 also includes the drop tanks from the A6M8 kit.

A6M7 Variants:

09813 and identical 09992 each include the parts to build a Model 62, includes drop tanks and four types of bombs.

A6M5c and A6M8 Variants:

09072, 09409, 09460, 09606, 09990, and 51952 are identical, have strengthened wings, cowl and rollover pylon to build a Type 52c (Hei) only.  51947 is almost identical to 09072 and 09409, lacks the Type 52c cowl, and includes resin cowl, prop, stores, etc. to build an A6M8.  09821 and identical 09991 each include all the styrene parts to build an A6M8 equipped with external tanks or two sizes of rockets.

52965 is an impressive set of kits which celebrates the Hasegawa Corporation 65th Anniversary.  The set includes 15 complete 1/48 scale A6M Zero kits, numbered 09981 through 09995, four of which are newly added variants (the A6M1 Experimental, A6M2-K two-seat trainer, A6M7 Type 62, and A6M8 Type 54/64), plus many extras.  The individual kits are tabulated above.  The set comes in a numbered large dark green corrugated board box with a carrying handle.  The kits are in simple brown one-piece unsealed boxes, with parts and decals in clear plastic bags.  While many of the decal versions are not new, all decals are produced by Cartograf of Italy.  Hasegawa does not yet sell these kits separately but one may find them via resellers who are willing to break up the set. Extras include a boxed set of fifteen colored posters of Koike Shigeo artwork for each A6M kitted version that are suitable for framing, three white metal figures, and a small colored brochure in a sealed bag. The white metal figures require assembly and include a kneeling military photographer, a ground crewman, and a pilot who can be built with right arm saluting or down in the cockpit; the pilot includes a seat cushion and a parachute; the three figures are made up of 12 pieces total.  This is truly an impressive anniversary celebration item!
